The Shattered Rainbow
(the following is compiled from information given on the Dual Civilization Cards of the Official Duel Masters Trading Card game, and heavily embellished)
A prismatic power, buried deep within the mantle of the planet, radiating its energy outwards, through channels and vessels known to few within the civilizations inhabiting the world. A power glimpsed only rarely, sometimes by shamans of the Nature Civilization, which they harnessed in the Rainbow Stones, and at other times by the Spectral Knights of Light, who appeared to be in tune with this strange power. Not even the Megapocalypse had managed to stop this strange, bountiful energy from continuing to radiate out from the planet, but if there was one race of beings that always seemed to be able to throw a proverbial wrench into the natural order of things, it was Tropico and his associates. Cyber Lords.
Undisturbed in the depths of the ocean, the behemoth creation known as the Fort Megacluster had been drilling for quite awhile, slowly, chewing through rock and mineral, until finally, it struck something more. Something powerful. That powerful something did not react 'well' to the intrusion.
The world they live on is made up of rock and a lattice network of crystallized elemental energy. This energy normally slowly would leak to the surface of the world as mana, it's form becoming more and more compatible with the planet as it did. A power that the shamans of nature had learnt to use. When the crystal network began to destabilize, the power, and the shards of it, began to tear the crust of the planet. In tiny chunks, send splintering off by the shattering, the prism shards began to blast out of the mantle of the planet, many going high into the atmosphere before falling to earth again.
The tiny rainbow shards showered the surface of the planet, causing all sorts of strange effects. A few of them, by chance, even sliced right through creatures as they shot out of the planet's crust, but these fortunate beings did not all die. Those that did die... did not exactly stay dead, either. Power was infused into them like new, as they gained the powers of the Rainbow, as well as sometimes even merging with other creatures that fell victim to the same shard. Sometimes even simply coming into contact with these shards would cause new abilities in creatures.
The power of this energy gave many creatures traits associated with more than one of the civilizations, and some even seemed to be of two races at once, as their mergings caused their powers to combine with those of their allies. Even more importantly, entirely new types of being came into existence, as the rainbow shards struck fossils and other random things, transforming them, infusing them with the prismatic energy, sometimes warping, sometimes creating, always changing...
When the Cyber Lords broke into the lattice network of the planet's energy, they intended to harness it as soon as they could, as the findings from the Akashic database had indicated they would be able to do. What they found instead was that the 'Rainbow' was far beyond their control. Beyond the control of anything on the planet. When it shattered, there was nothing anyone could do to stop the shockwaves of energy and shards of crystalline prismatic energies from saturating the planet's crust.
The creatures spawned by the shattering of the rainbow have many forms, many faces, and seem to have loyalty to more than one civilization, rather than banding together to only look out for themselves, as a group. The Cyber Lords predict that the planet has only seen the beginning of the power of the rainbow, and that further destabilization will occur if they even try to repair what they have already done. It is just a matter of watching and waiting now, to see what exactly this power will do to change the world.
The creatures occupy all realms of the planet, from deep in the oceans, to high in the skies, to the points where the savage badlands of the Fire Realm meet the dense jungles of nature. They act as new weapons and warriors for their civilizations and their goals, their power easily outstripping that of their counterparts, but they each require more power from the planet to be spurred into the battles. Without power from both sides of their nature, they find themselves unable to gather the will to fight, regardless of anything else. The shamans of Nature have experimented with methods of using other souls to provide energy for the creatures, bringing them through what normally act as dimensional gates, but now the powers allow them to sacrifice one soul to summon another, even that of such creatures.
Creatures that were not touched directly by the Rainbow still sometimes display attraction to rainbow shards, and often, consistent exposure changes them in some way, normally granting power not to them directly, but infusing them with strange energy that radiates out from them to influence allies. The radiation given off by such shards, if taken into the body of the creature, in one way or another, seems to poison it, and only the hardiest of them survive this, to actually live on and display such abilities.
When dealing with the power of the Rainbow, one must be careful in attempts to harness it, as it takes longer to become available for use than regular forms of mana, due to its particular composition. However, it has extra usefulness, as either of the types of mana energy that it gives off can be harnessed, once it has been in the area long enough to become active.
The creatures created by the Rainbow energy are almost all highly dangerous and beyond the realm of ordinary beings, making many wonder if, in tampering with the planet, the Cyber Lords have unleashed a new terrifying danger upon them all. |
